Meeting of Tower-Soudan Historical Society

February 8, 2007

President Richard Hanson opened up meeting at 9 a.m. at the Tower State Bank.

Andy Larson was elected to be representative for the Board of Governors which is part of the St. Louis County Historical Society.

There was discussion regarding a yearly audit of our books by a CPA or independent firm.

A calendar of events for St. Louis County Historical Society was handed out.

We have five new members and $55 has been received in donations.  Caroline Spenser will become a member.  She has donated many items.  Her grandfather had a butcher shop in Tower.  (She invented the Barbie doll).

Current plans are for the depot to become a focal point for the riverfront project.  Steve Abrahamson and Richard will work on moving the cabin closer to the depot.  The caboose of our train needs repair.  A man from southern Minnesota built windows for the train.  The city would like bars put on the windows to protect them from breakage.

There is possible outreach to the schools regarding visits by first graders.  In addition there are lesson plans for 4th grade students on a genealogical study.

There was some interest in high school girls (taught by Sue Anderson) doing a mural of the history of Tower.  Paint might be furnished by Valspar .

The City of Tower donated the Tippets steamer that is stored in the garage to the Historical Society in a letter dated January 30, 1980 signed by Wallace Heikkinen.

History day in May is sponsored by Mn Historical Society.  Motion was made by LeRoy Holmes, seconded by Andy Larson to send Jayne Sundeen and Richard Hanson at a cost of $25 each.  Passed.

Motion made by LeRoy Holmes, seconded by Jackie Kangas to pay $75 a month to Jayne Sundeen retroactive to January 2007 for answering phones, e-mails, and sending out brochures.  Passed

There was discussion regarding hourly wages for summer help. Minimum hourly figure suggested was $7.00.  It is thought that the museum will be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

A motion to have our annual Spring dinner tentatively on Tuesday, April 24th  was made by LeRoy Holmes and seconded by Jayne Sundeen.  Passed.

It was suggested that Gloria Hegg be contacted to conduct the program for the banquet.

Membership of the Tower-Soudan Historical Society is now close to 50.

Moved by Ramona Heikkinen and seconded by LeRoy Holmes to adjourn.  Passed.  Meeting adjourned.

Those in attendance were: Richard Hanson, Barb Burgess, Andy Larson, Jayne Sundeen, Ramona Heikkinen, Jackie Kangas, LeRoy and Kathy Holmes.

Respectfully submitted,

Kathy Holmes
